Antennas

March 2nd, 2008

I been a ham for 39 years I got my tickett in 1969 an Antennas were my bag.  but starting out before I got a ham tickett I had an old 5 chrystal CB rig.  then a 23 channel an a 40 channel.  how long is an antenna   well its  the Frequency in MH devided by 468..  so for CB 40 channel  take 27.2 into 468  and  it would be  about  17 feet an 2 inches.

Should the ant, get hot, not if its matched it wont,  during Vietnam  we  used  4-1000A  amps running as high as 5,000 watts,  if  we was on a  14 gage wire  for a dipole an the SWR was below 1.8 to 1   no heat on the ant. :)

If you have heat you have a very big loss,  heat is not free , its  the power loss  , what dont go out in power is heat an no one can hear heat hi hi.  (hi hi is ham for a laugh in CW)

It is not so much power that get your signal out.  its  how you use it.  I have  worked  around that world on  100 watts.

and  during phone patches to viet nam we  ran around  800 watts Peak to peak…    but we used an full sized  beam , at  125 ft…   Sargent Stevens in Okinawa, ran the Marine Mars Gov staton,  he never turned on his linear , didnt need to, he has a 5 wave romnic at 70 ft. pointed at the states,  an when Steve talked with a collins S line using  6146s at 180 watts P-P  every one heard him..  sure he had the biges linear I ever heard of, but  he never needed it…   what we did was move frequency as the bands  change..  you cant do that with cB  being your stuck with 11 meters.  W7FTU  worked Japan for Oregon on 100 millwatts  jsut to see if he could.  whe used code (CW) no carrier,  side band is almost as good,  AM  is bad  the carrier is big an you could say heavy  contains a lot of weight hard to get  far.    But dont worry so much about power,   power wont  do near as much as a good antenna.

I can take a CB  with a full size 5 element beam, up  at least  1/2 wave ( 17ft) above the ground an use  5 watts single side band,  an out talk a guy with 500  watts AM an a vertical any day of the week, I wont sound  mushy an to loud, but ill be clear  an go father punch through more noise. AM is a class C amp. an its not linear so you cant accually run an amp very well as a linear is Class AB1  also a class C  effiency is at best  55%   where as AB1 is  around  70%   why,  well running  single side band  your not key down an have no carrier,,  so the tube  handles it much better,,,   class C  tube is  running at  key down an  a lot is lost right in the tube due to heat…there is a lot more to it,  but this is easiest way to explain it.   oh I didnt mention Im also an Electronic engineer  ( well at least I use to be) :)

CW and the Ham

March 2nd, 2008

To tell you the truth, its a shame they took CW out of Haming,  I’m an Old Guy, I remember how hard it was to larn CW an get it up to 13 for the general test.  But even now days it has uses,  Im use to be a commerical fisherman, an did you know you can tell which light house you at because the dont just flash, they flash a CW letter,  Also I ahve had friends theat lost theeir electronics due to taking on water, or  wireing fires.  they got help with a flash light, using code.

Hams are an elite Group and what keep it that way,  it should never be easy to get a tickett..   I spent  every day studying for a year to get my tickett,  an I hold it very high, Im proud to be a ham.  a old ham would not lie to you, he wouldnt cheat you.  he or she was decated,,,  I hope we never loose that.

Now I’m not putting anyone down that dont know CW, But I hope we all still hold our ticketts with pride that we are a bit different than other folks :)

Pass Ports do you need one

March 2nd, 2008

Well do you need a Pass Port,  Well maybe you dont a friend of mine wanted to go to Mexico,  on the week end he didnt have time to renew his passport.  So we called the boarder Patrol and they said if you ahve your state ID and you birth certificate as long as its a driving trip, an not an air or boat trip no passport is required.  ( this may change, call the boarder patrol)  flying you need one.  they also told him to be sure an make copies of  you ID an leave it with a trusted friend in case you loose it. so they can call you friend hand  have  you ID faxed to them.  Before going to any other country. be sure an check out the requirments, as they can change..

Duel Core vs Core 2

March 2nd, 2008

I decided to get the duel core 3.4 gig intel, as I figured  the frequency would  probably be  faster than 1.8 gig core 2, alothought the D945  has a bad reputaion for heating,, I found this is not a proble, I use the MSI board, which monitors the processor during usage.  My processor runs at about 39c  during web usage,  heavy gaming not over 52c

Its very fast I cant tell any difference between it an some of the guys that have the 2.4 gig core 2  except  mine cost a lot less :)
